There is a long-standing tradition in the Spartan Marching Band of rubbing Glen Brough’s head for good luck. It’s been around for more than 25 years. Brough had hair when it started.
It began with a few trumpet players who insisted rubbing an Irishman’s head would bring good luck. Brough has quite a bit of Irish in him.
As the band lines up in the tunnel to take the field at Spartan Stadium, Brough takes off his hat and makes his way through the mass of students, pumping them up with, “Let’s do this.”
He makes his way past trombonists and tuba players and saxophonists and the rest. They rub his head as he rushes through. He shouts. They shout. It’s time to get hyped up. Time to get loud. Time to march. Time to be aggressive.
He slows down when he reaches the color guard. They touch his head gently. Even Sparty has joined in on the tradition.
“I blame the band and my barber for my current hairstyle,” Brough, the Spartan Marching Band's visual and field coordinator. He's bald, of course.
